The Ottawa Rotary Home opened its doors in 1982. With the purpose of improving the quality of life of caregivers and individuals with disabilities through an approach responsive to individual needs, the ORH admits children, youth, or adults with physical disabilities or complex medical needs.
Respite means something different to every family, so the Rotary Home offers a variety of respite programs tailored for different groups.
When caring for individuals; parents and families are our guides.
Rotary Home strives to create a home-like environment that makes families comfortable knowing their family member will be well cared for. With the underlying philosophy that no family should face the daily challenges of caring for a child or young adult with a disability alone there are over 281 families registered with ORH respite programs.
The Children Respite Programs are open 7 days a week, 356 days a year (only closing over the Christmas break). Children and youth up to their twenty-first birthday, who have a neuromuscular or musculoskeletal disability generally restricting their mobility, have access to the Regular Planned Relief program or general respite bookings. There is also a program specifically for children up to their eighteenth birthday, who have a complex medical needs and are technologically dependent requiring nursing supports.
The Adult Respite Program supports adults after the age of 21. Since 2009 over 120 adults have accessed respite at the Leitrim campus. Without annual government funding, the Ottawa Rotary Home relies on fundraiser dollars and the generosity of corporate sponsorship partners dedicated to the Home’s mission. When a family member stays in the Adult Respite Program, they are supported in a barrier free environment, with qualified, talented employees who help make their stay an enjoyable experience.
