Ottawa clubs have been active in supporting communities within the Caribbean in times of need.

Local clubs work with Rotary clubs in region to ensure that projects have local buy-in, properly take into account local factors and have the best chance of success.

In December 2020, the volcano of La Soufierre on the island of Saint Vincent erupted violently leading to a partial evacuation of the island. Emergency response teams rallied to the aid of Saint Vincent.

After the immediate emergency passed there was a need to assist many impacted communities.

Helping to get the island back on it's feet an Ottawa region club worked with local businesses (Pythian and Best Buy) to donate laptops to two schools on the island. This included one school for children with disabilities.

In 2017, hurricane Maria decimated the small island nation of Dominica. A number of Ottawa Rotary clubs together with members of the Ottawa Dominican diaspora hit on a plan to provide skills training to islanders to allow them to rebuild using climate resilient best practices.

Working with the local club in Dominica and the Dominican State College and with grants from Rotary International and Global Affairs Canada, a Distance Learning system to provide practical vocational training was roled out across several sites on the island. Colleges & Institutes Canada, Algonquin College and Dalhousie University agreed to provide learning content. The Dominican government and the Builders and Contractors Association are providing enthusiastic support.

Distance Learning enables small nations in the Caribbean to participate fully in a digital world.
