Building literacy skills is critical to a childs mental development and life success. That is why Expanding Literacy is one of Rotary's Areas of Focus.
Ottawa Area Rotary Clubs support a variety of literacy programs devoted to inspiring a love of reading in the hearts of children and adults alike. Here is a brief description of the numerous projects primed by local clubs.
The value of education is universal but for youth in challenging circumstances it can be life changing. Bursary grants provide funds to worthy candidates with limited means to pursue their education. Bursaries provide a message of encouragement to students by showing that someone is interested in supporting their education.
Students are often motivated to more greatly excel in higher education with this encouragement. Beyond this, feeling appreciation for the support they receive, students can be inspired to give back to their communities themselves.
At Rotary we realize we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world's most persistent issues. Ottawa clubs work with 35,000+ clubs globally to promote peace, fight disease, grow economies and more. A key lever is to invest in leaders of the future.
A major event in the service calendar for the Club of Nepean Kanata is the annual "Adventure in High Technology" forum.
Experts within Ottawa's vibrant hi-tech business community along with our excellent universities and colleges have been providing volunteer presenters for nearly 40 years.
Sessions are highly interactive with students not only connecting with each other but also being able to pose questions to the expert presenters directly.
Finding presenters for the event is never a challenge as it's reputation grows.
For over 70 years the Rotary Club of Ottawa in partnership with Rotary Clubs across the Ottawa region and the nation has invited young leaders of high school age to come to Ottawa for the Adventure in Citizenship Program. Students come from all provinces and territories.
The program is designed to help senior high school students gain a deeper understanding about the privileges and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.
Participants learn about leadership and how Canadian institutions operate through site visits and through meetings with current and past political leaders and senior government officials.
