Rotary is active in many ways, helping Africans to realize their development aspirations. In addition to the many significant projects of local clubs, Rotary International's Polio Eradication Initiative and Charitable Foundation are very active in the region. Here are several examples.
In February, 2022, the Ukrainian war burst upon the world resulting in millions of internally displaced people.
In the winter of 2023 with attacks occurring every week on Ukrainian power infrastructure many faced the prospect of a long cold and potentially life-threatening winter with little support.
Ottawa Rotary clubs and other district 7040 clubs together with community partners responded. A fund raising drive was initiated to provide the Rotary Club of Kharkiv with funds to purchase blankets for the needy local populace.
Ottawa clubs have been active in supporting communities within the Caribbean in times of need.
Local clubs work with Rotary clubs in region to ensure that projects have local buy-in, properly take into account local factors and have the best chance of success.
In December 2020, the volcano of La Soufierre on the island of Saint Vincent erupted violently leading to a partial evacuation of the island. Emergency response teams rallied to the aid of Saint Vincent.
After the immediate emergency passed there was a need to assist many impacted communities.
